Each page is rendered to a PNG image at your chosen DPI, right in your browser with pdf.js. A single-page PDF downloads as one image; a multi-page PDF comes back as a numbered ZIP. Very large pages are capped to stay inside your browser's canvas limits, and the result tells you the resolution it actually used.

This converts whole pages into pictures, so the result is an image, not searchable text. It is not the tool for pulling the embedded photos out of a PDF.

This tool renders each page of your PDF as a PNG, a lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly as drawn. There are no compression artifacts and no halos around text, which is why PNG is the right pick for documents, screenshots, diagrams, and anything with sharp edges. Note it converts whole pages into images: it does not extract the embedded photos out of the PDF, and because pages render on white it does not produce a transparent background.

PNG stores every pixel exactly, using the same family of compression as a ZIP file: it packs the data down and unpacks it back to the original, bit for bit. Two practical consequences follow. First, there are no artefacts, so the hard edge of a letter or a one-pixel table rule stays crisp instead of picking up the faint grey ringing JPEG leaves behind. Second, the file survives editing: you can open it, change it, and save it again as many times as you like without it degrading, whereas a JPEG loses a little more each round. DPI sets the resolution. Higher means more detail but a much larger file, roughly with the square of the number.

Maximum detail for archival or heavy zooming. PNG is already large, so this gets heavy on long PDFs. Very large pages, and phones, are capped a little lower to stay within the browser's canvas limits.

Yes, and this is PNG's quiet advantage. Its compression is lossless, so opening a PNG, editing it, and saving it again gives you exactly the pixels you had, every time. JPEG throws away a little more detail on each save, so a file that has been through several edit-and-save rounds visibly deteriorates. If the image is going to be worked on rather than just viewed, start from PNG.

PNG is an RGB format and has no CMYK support at all, so a commercial printer working in CMYK will have to convert it, and the colours can shift when they do. For screen work, internal printing, and office documents that is a non-issue. If you are handing artwork to a professional press, ask them what they want rather than sending PNG by default.
